Something New

From time to time, we find it necessary to stop the usual fun stuff and warn all of you good folks about some of the crooked things that are going on.
Last week we got an Email from a person.  This is the email.

Hello There,

How are you doing? My name is XXXX XXXXX(name removed) from Devon Philadelphia , I have been on the lookout for some artworks lately in regards to I and my wife’s anniversary which is just around the corner. I stormed on to some of your works which I found quite impressive and intriguing,I must admit you’re doing quite an impressive job. You are undoubtedly good at what you do.

With that being said, I would like to purchase some of your works as a surprise gift to my wife in honor of our upcoming wedding anniversary. It would be of help if you could send some pictures of your piece of work, with their respective prices and sizes(bearing it in mind that my budget is within $500-$5000)which are ready for immediate sale.
I look forward to reading from you.

Best regards,

From here we directed him to the website.  Next we heard from him.

Thanks for the response. Having carefully looked through the pictures of your works and their prices. I had chosen two Puppets “Kimmy (L-95) and Lolly (C-93)”Am presently working on my relocation to Quebec, thus, am doing all i could to make this event quite a memorable one. In regards to payment, my reason for choosing check as a means of payment is owing to the fact that my wife handles the family bank cards and paypal transactions. So am choosing check to keep this a complete surprise as intended. Consequently, I would authorize a check to you for the payment of the chosen piece of work as soon as i have your full name and contact address (preferably for FedEx delivery no P.O box). As soon as you receive the check and it clears your bank, I will have my personal shipping agent (who is also moving my other properties) contact you to arrange shipping/pick up of the piece from you. This is to avoid my wife receiving it if been directly shipped to my address which would ruin the surprise for the wedding anniversary. I will be looking forward to receiving your phone number, full name and physical address the check should be issued to, in your mail. Best Regards,XXXXX

We never responded to him.   When someone from another country wants to have there “agent” pick up the puppet  –  run away as fast as you can.  Typically they will send you a check that mistakenly has been made out for a couple hundred more then it should have been.

When their “Agent” arrives to pick up the puppet(s), they will try to get you to refund the overpay in cash.  Then they will take the puppet(s) and leave.  As soon as they leave, they will stop payment on the check.  You will have lost the puppets, the additional cash and your sanity when you realize how stupid you were.  No one from another Country can afford to pay an “agent” to pick up something like a puppet.  If FedEx can deliver the check, why can’t they deliver the puppets.

We think if you read his notes carefully, you can find several things that should turn on the red lights in your brain.  We want to help our friends shut down crooks and keep things done right.

Thats all for now.

  1. Yep… had someone attempt to do something similar to me. The concept is that they will send a certified check for your goods or services that is more than required. They tell you to take the check to the bank and cash it before rendering services and give the excess amount to their “agent”. The “certified ” check often looks legit enough that it even gets past the bank teller. Within a couple of weeks, it is revealed that the check is phoney and you (the mark) are stuck with covering the charges. Fortunately, like you, I have a pretty good and finely tuned “BS detector” and didn’t fall for the scam either.
