Most of us recognize something that is funny, but sometimes coming up with something funny can be a bit difficult.

The question is “How do you create a joke”? There are many different ways to achieve this, but we have one possible way that you may not have thought of.

Go to your local library and check out a couple of books on jokes. It should be understood that we do not advocate stealing jokes. However, when you get a couple of joke books, sit down with a pen and paper to take notes as you read them.

Read the jokes in the books. If you find something particularly funny, make a note of it. Now take the story that was funny and modify it to fit the situation of your act. Try it out with one of your characters. If it still seems very funny after it has been modified, then you might want to use it in your act. Maybe you can do a trial run to see what kind of audience reaction the joke gets. Then either leave it in or discard it.

Do this repeatedly with several new jokes. Find them. Modify them. Try them out. We know that there are a variety of ways to come up with new material, but this is one way that you may not yet have thought of.

Go get em!

We will talk again next week,

Steve and JET
