We are going to focus on some areas that will give you the most benefit from ConVENTion this year. First and foremost are the open shows that you will be attending. This will include the big shows and the open Mike shows that will be presented each evening.
You are going to attend with the idea of having fun, and that is one good reason to attend. Even more than that should be the idea of attending to learn more about your craft and to sharpen your skills as a Ventriloquist.
To do that, we suggest that you get ready to go to school. First thing for school is to buy a notebook and get a couple of pens or pencils. Most of us learn better by taking notes. Just the act of taking notes helps our minds to absorb more material from “class”.
As each performer gets up, take notes on his/her performance. Take note of his/her manipulation skills. What makes them good. Where do they need to improve? How is there lip movement? What makes them funny? Or not funny? How do they score on their presentation of their material?
Take notes on anything that you see about their performance that makes them funny or even the things that you should avoid doing that makes them not funny. Knowing what to do is important, but knowing what not to do is just as important.
Take notes on the type of material that they use that you can also build from to help your performance. If you take good notes on each person that you see, you will get a wealth of knowledge that will help you in improving your own performance.
We will talk again next week.

Will do! I always carry my iPhone and use the NOTES app to type or TALK collecting the valuable information and helpful hints from VENThaven. I still refer to my NOTES from OUR first ventriloquist ConVENTion four years ago!
I took a notebook to my first conVENTion last year, will bring a notebook this year too! I’ve been watching videos of my own performance to see where I can improve and then do my best to do so. And I love watching really good ventriloquists because I can see their incredible skills.
