Most of us have one or two characters that we do not use that much. We like the puppet but for some reason the character just does not seem to work for us.
How do we go about changing that situation? For starters lets say that you have been using the character for a particular type of personality. Now take the character out and put him/her on.
If you have been using the puppet for a hillbilly, try to put the puppet into a different character in your mind. Try him as a New Yorker or someone from the deep south. Try him as someone from England or as a Hispanic. You be the judge as to the type of character that you want to try with the puppet.
Once you come up with a type of personality that the puppet has, now look at its appearance and see what it any costume changes need to be done to achieve the look that best goes with its new personality.
Make a trip to your local thrift store and find a couple of outfits that can be put on the puppet to give him the look that you think it needs to have to match the new voice and accent.
Now work on the script for the puppet. At this point you have taken a little time along with maybe $20.00 on a new outfit and you have given yourself a brand new puppet for your act. There are lots of possibilities that you can work with.
We will talk again next week.
